General

Reporting directly to the Manager of School & Public Programs, the incumbent designs, develops, delivers, and evaluates learning and engagement activities on themes related primarily to the Science Gallery, with occasional support for the Planetarium and Museum Galleries as required. The incumbent’s responsibilities are split between learning program delivery (50%), and the development of new informal and formal learning activities for various audiences (50%). The incumbent will be responsible for the development of new and innovative learning programs inspired by science content at the Manitoba Museum. This role will also involve the development and delivery of youth–centered programming that will raise awareness, build capacity, and improve understanding of climate change, as well as capture the impact of these programs through the GenAction evaluation framework. The grant-funded GenAction project encompasses a number of distinct activities for youth audiences.

The incumbent must exercise initiative, creativity, and independent judgment, maintain a flexible, respectful, and energetic approach when working with the Museum’s public, and be able to work with minimal supervision. This position is full-time (35 hours) and will require evening and weekend work. Work hours may change depending on seasonal departmental activities and special events/programs.

Key Accountabilities & Typical Duties:

Priority 1: Learning Program Production, Development, and Coordination (50%)

The Learning & Engagement Producer (Science & Climate Action) will develop, pilot, coordinate, deliver, promote, and train others to deliver science-based learning activities for diverse audiences. The incumbent will be responsible for initiating new, project-based strategic programs for identified target audiences, including schools and school-age children, adults, families, toddlers & babies, seniors, etc. They will work within the greater Learning & Engagement Team in order to identify areas of need; they will be expected to respond to evolving priorities with energy, agility, and creativity. They will support the ongoing coordination of the Learning & Engagement team’s volunteer program.

  1. Design, develop, deliver, update, and evaluate learning programs, tours, and demonstrations for schools and public audiences in consultation with the Manager of School & Public Programs, and the Director of Learning & Engagement (e.g. school programs, adult programs and workshops, interpretive activities, outreach programs, public events such as Spring Break and Winter Break, etc.);
  2. Develop, deliver, evaluate, and report on the Museum’s GenAction grant-funded activities, such as the Youth Climate Alliance, climate-related school programming, Explore Science Zone activities, etc;
  3. Design, develop, deliver, update, and evaluate new and existing digital initiatives, including Virtual  Field Trips, online public programs, video content, and digital scavenger hunts. Film and edit video content as required;
  4. Seek out and facilitate community partnerships for new opportunities, assist in the maintenance of existing community relationships;
  5. Coordinate overall strategy for public programs volunteers and interns; assist/lead with recruitment,  scheduling, orientation, training, etc;
  6. Assist in day to day program logistics and space usage, liaising with other departments;
  7. Promote the institution’s learning programs for target audiences; assist and/or lead in the marketing, sales, and promotion of new and existing programs, through website, social media, Tessitura, YouTube, etc;
  8. Required to do media interviews within areas of content expertise;
  9. Present views (visitors, staff, and volunteers), concerns, and needs of the Department as input into management decisions on exhibitions and learning programs to enhance visitor experience;
  10. Other duties as assigned.

 

Priority 2: Learning Program Delivery and Maintenance (50%)

To create positive visitor experience by engaging with diverse audiences, facilitating both formal and informal learning experiences in-person and online, ensuring visitor’s safe, engaging, and inspiring interactions with Science Gallery exhibitions, Planetarium shows, and programs. Ensure ongoing maintenance and functional operations for all learning experiences, Science Gallery exhibitions and spaces, and provide ongoing support to volunteers.

  1. Take a leadership role on daily programs, schedules, and operations;
  2. Deliver booked interpretive programs for the institution’s school and general public audience as per daily schedule, both in-person and online;
  3. Deliver Planetarium shows using Digistar technology;
  4. Answer inquiries from and provide information to the general public on all Science Gallery and Planetarium programs, exhibitions and activities;
  5. Learn pertinent information on departmental programs, galleries, and temporary exhibitions as required;
  6. Setting up and taking down furniture, equipment, and other program materials; operating A/V equipment on a daily basis according to programs scheduled, including virtual program digital technologies (Zoom, Teams, Gimbal, iPhones, Digistar etc.);
  7. Ensuring sufficient supply inventory for specific programs as assigned;
  8. Provide training and support of new staff and/or interns, as well as train, evaluate and support volunteers;
  9. Supervising volunteers (weekdays and weekends) to ensure optimum interpretive activity and exhibition coverage, and report on volunteer attendance and issues that may arise to supervisor, and other Learning & Engagement staff;
  10. Supporting and liaising with rental staff for special events;
  11. Researching program content and liaising with other staff as needed;
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of program development process and techniques for various audiences; schools, families, adults, etc.
  2. Demonstrated skills in teaching or facilitating engaging learning experiences.
  3. Experience delivering Planetarium content using Digistar technology is desired.
  4. Good oral and written communication skills in both official languages.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with staff, volunteers and the general public.
  6. Good public speaking skills including the ability to present programs and demonstrations effectively and enthusiastically to a wide range of age and interest groups.
  7. Ability to perform research at an advanced level.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  9. Understanding of trends in learning, science communication, outreach, and engagement.
  10. Experience delivering programs via digital platforms, troubleshooting online AV equipment, and familiarity filming and editing videos is an asset.
  11. Knowledge of Manitoba curriculum is desired; familiarity with existing Manitoba Museum school programs (Science Gallery and Planetarium) preferred.
  12. Ability to work in an organized manner, both independently and in a team environment.
  13. Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and innovate.

 

Education, Training, and Experience

  1. University degree in relevant field, such as, Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or Education, with substantial coursework relating to the sciences;
  2. At least one year of experience in a similar position, i.e. developing programs and working with diverse audiences;
  3. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  4. Fluent in both official languages is required; experience in using French and English languages in
    a museum environment is preferred.

This is a full-time term position with an anticipated start date in October 2024 and an end date of June 30, 2025. The salary range is $43,777.68 to $55,392.73 annually. Application deadline is August 30, 2024.
