Museum Galleries

Climate change can be a daunting topic as a global issue, and what’s happening in our province often gets lost in the midst. This program will give participants an overview of how our climate is changing in Manitoba, especially in our Arctic/Subarctic, Boreal Forest and Prairies biomes. We also use our Earth History Gallery to demonstrate the differences between natural and human-caused climate change.
As we explore the Museum Galleries, students will be challenged to think about what those changes mean to the biodiversity of our province, as well as the social, economic and environmental consequences for Manitobans.
During the program, we also engage the students in thinking about solutions that can be implemented by themselves at the family, school and community level. Students will be encouraged to commit to actions that can help combat climate change, and give them hope that, together, positive results can still happen.
Topics covered during this program include:
- Difference between natural and human-caused climate change
- Melting permafrost in the Arctic and its impact on plants and animals, as well as the Inuit populations
- How scientists use models to conduct scientific investigations and demonstrations, including replica ice cores
- How forest fires impact the Boreal Forest, and how they are tied to climate change
- Extreme weather events in the Prairies and the socioeconomic challenges that come with them

The formation of rocks is examined while students sort rocks into three types – igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. In the Earth History Gallery, students are introduced to mining in Manitoba, the properties of a beautiful variety of minerals, and how minerals are essential in our lives. Our award-winning digital Ancient Seas exhibition illustrates how fossils found in Manitoba support the theory of plate tectonics.

Students come to appreciate the level of skill required of an Inuit artisan by shaping and polishing their own soapstone pendant to take home. Drawing from traditional and present-day objects, students learn about the different uses of soapstone in its practical and symbolic functions, its physical proprieties, and Moh’s hardness scale.

This is the story of how a revolution in one of the most basic of all human enterprises – the making of maps – is shedding new light on our planet’s evolution in the wake of rising global temperatures. Using stunning, latest-generation imagery from space, Atlas of a Changing Earth takes viewers into the dynamic processes causing coastal glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica to melt, and explores how rising seas could threaten coastlines the world over. The aurorae, or northern lights, are one of the most beautiful and mysterious sights in the night sky. Join an expedition to the Northwest Territories in northern Canada to see these shimmering curtains of light under pristine dark skies. We first see the northern lights as northern peoples have seen them for thousands of years, and appreciate their beautiful and varied forms.
Aurorae are not only beautiful, but they also hint and some of the fundamental properties of our planet Earth and its interaction with the Sun. Modern science has revealed some of the amazing processes that cause these beautiful lights in their many colours, but there is still more to learn. Aurorae explores the connection between solar activity and northern lights, highlighting the latest science and looking ahead to the upcoming solar maximum next year.

Learn how the great bully, the giant bear Mista Maskwa, was finally tamed by a brave band of birds. This adventure is mapped in the stars as the birds chase Mista Maskwa every night, keeping us safe from his foul temperament.
