Join us for a two-day mitten making workshop in partnership with the Seven Oaks House Museum. This is an in depth 2-part workshop on constructing traditional mittens. The first part of the workshop will begin with a 1.5-hour introduction to the Museum’s extensive mitten, glove, and gauntlet collection led by Eric Napier Strong, Curator of the Seven Oaks House Museum, and Rob Gendron, Learning and Engagement Producer of the Manitoba Museum. Joining Dr. Maureen Matthews, participants will be introduced to mittens, gloves, and gauntlets on display in the Museum Galleries and get a behind-the-scenes look at the large and historically significant collections in our museum vaults. Participants will see various designs and techniques used for mittens.
The second part of the workshop will be the construction of a warm and beautiful pair of leather hide mittens. All supplies and materials are included. The first day of the workshop will be the creation of a pattern, the cutting and assembling of the pattern. The 2nd class will be for finishing. The workshop will be lead by Alan Easter with his design that he learned from his grandmother.
A light lunch and refreshments are included in the ticket price, for both dates.
