Manitoba Nature

Studying Manitoba’s natural history can provide important clues for our future, especially about the effects of climate change and how our native plant and animal species will respond to a new environment.

The research conducted by our natural history curators, who work in the disciplines of botany, zoology, and paleontology-geology, helps us understand where we came from, how we got here, and how our actions effect our planet.

The Museum’s Natural History collections are developed and maintained as a specimen library of plants, animals, fossils, rocks and minerals. Specimens are used for reference and research, in public and school programs, and in exhibitions. At any given time, it is only possible to display a fraction of our collection in the Museum galleries. To view over three hundred of the fantastic specimens stored in our climate-controlled vaults, please click on the “Collections Database” option on the left-hand menu.
