TRADE now open in Discovery Room

FurTrade_02TRADE: Materials and Ideas in Transition is now open in the Museum Gallery’s Discovery Room. Curated by Kevin Brownlee and Amelia Fay, the exhibit contrasts ethnographic collections with archaeological materials and explores how we interpret what is found. In looking at the artefacts of the Fur Trade we see a remarkable blending of material culture. Neither First Nations nor Europeans could claim their technology was superior. The situation was much more complex, where materials and ideas blended to produce a material culture that drew on the knowledge and strengths of each group. Just as First Nations peoples re-worked and reused certain European-made items to better suit their needs, many First Nation technologies were embraced by Europeans.  While materials changed over time, the ideas remained the same and even persist today.
