Western Prairie Fringed Orchid is a nationally and provincially endangered plant found in remnant tall-grass prairies. It is currently protected by the Federal Species at Risk Act and the provincial Endangered Species Act and should not be picked. This species depends on pollinating moths for seed production and special fungi to help the seeds germinate, contributing to its rarity. This particular specimen is the first one ever collected in Manitoba.
