A favorite of hiking enthusiasts, puffballs are so named because the spores inside come out in puffs when stepped on. This species is not common, but does occur in coniferous forests of North America, Asia and Europe. Some sources state that it is edible when young but others state emphatically that is it not. These fungi appear in late summer, often growing in clusters.
