This individual is the reddest gartersnake ever recorded for Manitoba. It was caught as part of a Museum research project looking at colour variation in gartersnakes in the province. The results were published in an international journal, and this snake was featured on the cover. Affectionately named “Roja” (Spanish for “red”) or “Big Red”, it was kept as part of the live teaching collection at the University of Manitoba for four years until its death in 2010, after educating many students about animal diversity and colour variation in species. It is now part of the preserved collection at the Museum.
