This early 20th century smoothing plane was made by the E.A. Berg Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in Eskilstuna, Sweden. The horn shaped front handle is characteristic of planes made in continental Europe. This plane was brought to Winnipeg by Oscar Johnson (also known as Oskar Johansson) when he immigrated in 1927 from Karlshamn, Sweden. Born in 1900, Oscar apprenticed as in cabinetmaker from the age of 15 to 19. He initially found work in forestry and constructing grain elevators until 1936 when he began a 35 year career at Princess Furniture in Winnipeg.
