This exquisite novelty box was made by Sarah Jane Brigden (nee Wood) circa 1880. Creativity and crafting ran in Sarah’s family, as her mother was known for making ornaments with shells and cones, winning prizes at fairs for her handiwork. Sarah was born in 1861, the eldest of 10 children, and married William Brigden in 1886. The couple moved from Ontario to Manitoba in 1888 and settled north of Deloraine. Amongst their seven children was well known social reformer, feminist and activist Beatrice Bridgen.
