This brass sideplate was surface-collected from the Nelson River area in the 1990s. English gunsmiths created these serpent or dragon sideplate decorations during the early 18th century for smooth bore, lightweight, trade muskets. They were known as ‘North West’ guns due to the sheer number that were shipped and traded into what was then known as the ‘Northwest’, the Great Lakes.
