Log line

Log line

Product Description

The log line was used to estimate the speed of the ship.  The line had knots tied every seven fathoms (42 feet) and was placed on a spool so it could easily turn, attached to this was a wedge-shaped piece of wood (the log, or chip) that was thrown overboard.  If two knots passed through your hand you were travelling two knots per hour (or two nautical miles per hour).
