This charming child’s dress was made for Susanna Young by her mother at Lower Fort Garry in 1884. The fabric is a bengaline weave, possibly a cotton and wool blend. Bengaline was fashionable for women and children’s clothing in the 1880s and 1890s. Mrs. Young carefully decorated the dress with a pleated ruffle and a lattice pattern of silk satin ribbon. A sense of thrift comes through in the lining with the use of linen fabric remnants in three different patterns.
