In 1836, James Franks, his wife Justina and their son Charles travelled from London to York Factory on the ship Prince Rupert. During the voyage, Justina gave birth to a baby boy that the couple named Rupert. The family settled in the Red River area, where James worked as a farm servant at the 4th Experimental Farm, Hudson’s Bay Company at Lower Fort Garry until 1841. This well-loved wooden chair was made in 1839 for their children.
