Learn how to make your own pair of hand-crafted traditional moccasins in our upcoming workshop with artist Cynthia Boehm. Taking place over three Sunday afternoons, the workshop will begin with a visit behind-the-scenes into the Museum vaults to visit the province’s most prestigious collection of moccasins. Dr. Maureen Matthews, Curator of Cultural Anthropology, will introduce the various moccasin styles of Indigenous communities in Manitoba, and highlight the various decorative techniques including beadwork, quillwork, and embroidery.

This workshop includes all materials required to complete your own pair of personalized, beaded moccasins. You will learn custom pattern making, two-needle beading, sewing, puckering and shaping techniques, and will learn where to shop for supplies for future projects. We will learn about the differences between commercial and brain tanned hides, and participants will also have access to floral beading patterns.

Materials provided:

Alaska split leather (tan in colour), Rabbit fur trim, Synthetic pile lining, Beads, Beading needle, Leather needle, Threads (beading, and leather)

All other supplies such as leather shears and rulers will be available for use during the class. If you would like to make your moccasins out of another material or trim them with a different type of fur, you are welcome to bring along your own supplies.

After learning the two-needle beading technique, participants will be asked to complete the beading on their moccasin vamp between session 1 and session 2; as this is the most time consuming aspect of the project and there will not be time to complete the beading during class time, we have scheduled a three-week break between session1 and session 2.

Light refreshments, coffee, and tea will be provided.
