Workshop: Birch Bark Basket-Making – SOLD OUT

November 14 @ 10:30 am - 4:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 10:30 am, repeating until November 14, 2020

Two-day Workshop: Participants must attend both days.

  • Saturday, November 14 • 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
  • Sunday, November 15 • 10:30 am to 4:30 pm

Join us for a two-day birch bark basket-making workshop with master woodworker Mark Blieske. Participants will come away with an appreciation of the practice of basket-making as both a historical and contemporary usable art, along with their own small finished basket that can be used while out collecting berries or as a storage container.

The workshop includes an introduction to the Manitoba Museum’s extensive birch bark craft collection, as well as Mark’s personal collection representing different Indigenous communities in Canada. These works show the economic and cultural vitality of specific regions of the country and illustrate different Indigenous cultural approaches to birch bark as a decorative and practical medium.

Participants receive hands-on experience covering the basics of basket-making, identification of suitable birch trees, spruce/pine roots splitting and collecting, and discussion of historical, traditional, and contemporary techniques and technology.

General $155 + GST / Museum Members $145 + GST

Light refreshments and all materials are included in the cost of registration.
Participants are required to bring their own pair of work gloves and a lunch.

Have you participated in this workshop before? There is always something new to learn!  For those who have participated in a previous Birch Bark Basket-Making workshop, Mark will be introducing how to decorate your baskets with some of his patterns and templates.

For more information please contact Corinne Antoniuk at [email protected]

In order to ensure proper health and safety precautions for the wellbeing of our community, this workshop has limited capacity. All participants are required to wear a non-medical mask for the duration of the sessions, and our work stations will be set up in a socially-distanced manner with individual tool kits provided for use by each participant.
