Dark Matters: 30 Years of Hubble’s Search

March 7 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

30 years ago, NASA launched the most expensive telescope yet constructed into space, giving the world new eyes in the sky and an unobstructed view of the universe.  The Hubble Space Telescope was the realization of a decades long vision, but it also faced unprecedented challenges.

Dark Matters’ one-night-only planetarium show details the fatal flaw which led to Hubble’s early problems, the ingenious solution designed by scientists on the ground, and how Hubble went from a billion-dollar catastrophe to one of mankind’s most valuable tools.

Learn how Hubble’s most famous pictures were created, and how their beauty comes from hidden scientific data during a live lecture by Dr. Jayanne English from the University of Manitoba.

The evening is part of our new Dark Matters series to bring researchers, scientists and experts together with the public for informal evenings throughout the year.  The evening includes experiencing the Science Gallery after hours, an exclusive planetarium show, and a live lecture.  Tickets may be purchased online in advance and a cash bar and food will be available. This is an adult oriented program. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Background on Dr. English:

Dr. Jayanne English is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba.  With a background in both arts and astronomy, Dr. English has merged the two when creating astronomical images.  Working on the Hubble Heritage project, she helped turn archived data into colorized photos.  Her career has taken her around the globe with visiting scholar positions at the University of Oxford, University of Zurich, and the Australia Telescope National Facility.
