About Collections & Research

Did you know that The Manitoba Museum is home to over 2.6 million artifacts and specimens? We are honoured with a sacred trust by the people of Manitoba to protect, preserve, and research our province’s human and natural history, and we take this responsibility very seriously.

At any given time, it is only possible to display a fraction of our collection – including some of the most striking specimens – in the Museum galleries. These items are carefully preserved in humidity and temperature-controlled vaults. Now, for the first time, we invite you to view some of this incredibly rich material on-line. To the left is a menu with the option “Collections Database”. This will give you access to over 700 items from our human and natural history collections, each individually selected by the curator of that discipline and representing some of the best we have to offer.

Many people think of us as a fantastic place to spend the day with family and friends, but behind the scenes are a talented team of curators, who are consistently adding to what we know about our history, geology, ecology, and environment. The groundbreaking research conducted at The Manitoba Museum has won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, set fossil records back millions of years, explored the achievements of Manitoba’s cultural communities and First Peoples, and uncovered new species. Due to this success, our curators are highly respected by other institutions as experts in their fields.
