Winnipeg, MB (April 20, 2017): The Manitoba Museum can take you many places – back in time or across the known universe! This weekend, travel back in time to learn about the lifestyle of the heroic Sarah Ballenden of the Red River Settlement , or explore outer space in celebration of International Astronomy Week!
Museum Galleries Tour: The Era of Sarah Ballenden
The Manitoba Museum has partnered with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre for a special pre-theatre guided tour that explores what life was like for the heroine of their upcoming play, Sarah Ballenden.
About the Play: Against the landscape of the developing Red River Settlement, Sarah Ballenden has developed a thick skin as the Métis wife of a high-ranking Hudson’s Bay Company officer. But when a spark of gossip spreads through the Fort, Sarah vows to clear her name.
Whether you plan to see the play or not, the Museum tour is sure to fascinate. Featuring key artifacts from the early days of the Red River Settlement, visitors will learn about the Métis community and explore the collections of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Tour & Theatre Package:
The one-hour Era of Sarah Ballenden tour runs from 2:00 to 3:00 pm allowing plenty of time to make the 4:00 pm matinee performance. Visitors also welcome to arrive early, and explore the Museum Galleries before their tour.

Celebrating International Astronomy Week!
Kick off International Astronomy Week with a visit to the Planetarium and Science Gallery. This weekend only – April 22 and 23 – the first 200 visitors get a free star map so come early (open at 11 am), and stay to learn more about telescopes from 1:00 to 3:00pm. And, just for this weekend, the Planetarium has a special schedule:
- 11:30 am – Perfect Little Planet
- 1:00 pm – Search for Life: Are We Alone?
- 2:00 pm – Live With the Stars
- 3:00 pm – Back to the Moon… For Good!
- 4:00 pm – Live With the Stars
Make sure to take in the NASA Moon Rock, build a moon base with Lego bricks, or make a crater at the Boeing Explore Science Zone.
The Manitoba Museum is open 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
