Saturdays in Space Speaker Series: The OsirisREX Mission to an Asteroid

July 21, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The OsirisREX mission to an Asteroid – Dr. Ed Cloutis

The OSIRIS-REx mission is a daring one. It aims to visit and bring back a sample of Asteroid 101599 Bennu in 2023. Part of the mission includes a laser ranging and detection instrument know as a lidar that is part of Canada’s contribution to the mission. The lidar will help map the surface of the asteroid and will give us a new glimpse into the shapes and details of asteroids. Will it find the Petit Prince? Not likely, but the scientists in Manitoba who support the project will definitely be waiting for some revealing details. Join Dr. Cloutis as he brings an update about the mission and the importance of the work being done by scientists right here in Manitoba.
