Orange Shirt Days @ the Manitoba Museum feature special, all-day programming in the Museum Galleries focused on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action. Please join us for a time of learning and reflection offered in partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
Special programming includes videos from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, a self-guided tour through the Museum Galleries to discover many exhibits relevant to the history of Indian Residential Schools and the TRC Calls to Action, and our Manitoba Cares station where we encourage you to share your thoughts and make your own commitment to take action for Reconciliation.
Orange Shirt Day has been recognized in Manitoba since 2017. The orange shirt is a symbol of remembrance for Indian Residential School Survivors, which originated with the experience of Phyllis Webstad of the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. She shared her story of how her new orange shirt was taken away from her on her first day at St. Joseph Mission Indian Residential School, leaving her feeling worthless and insignificant. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation answer the TRC call for a national day of remembrance as a way for Canadians to publicly commemorate the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools and the resilience of Indian Residential School Survivors, their families, and communities.

The Indigenous people of North America connect with the night sky in fundamental ways that resonate with their world. In Legends of the Northern Sky, we learn and appreciate their stories in the stars and in turn, learn a little bit more about the spirit that connects us all.
Take a dangerous expedition south to retrieve summer and return it to the frozen north alongside Ocek, the fisher, and his band of animal friends. And, learn how the great bully, the giant bear Mista Maskwa, was finally tamed by a brave band of birds.

Take a guided tour of Manitoba’s night sky. This live show, presented by our planetarium staff, highlights the constellations, planets, and celestial events that you can see on clear evenings, and answer your space questions.
Visitors will also have access to hands-on fun in the Science Gallery, where they can test the universal laws of science and explore the wonders of technology and illusion in Science Gallery through favourite exhibits favourites such as the Matrix (mirror room), the pulley chairs, and the race track.
