March 4 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Globally Grassroots: Connecting the International Museum Community is a one-day workshop hosted by the Commonwealth Association of Museums in partnership with the Manitoba Museum. The event will bring together museum professionals both in-person and online to explore connections across borders and the themes that unite the postcolonial museum. Session themes include climate change & climate justice, Indigenous-led heritage initiatives, and repatriation and the care of human remains.

Speakers from across the Commonwealth will share best practices to kick off roundtable discussions where participants will have the opportunity to share and learn together.

Speakers will include:

Pat Allan, Curator of World Cultures, Glasgow Museums – Glasgow, Scotland

Nichodimas Cooper, Trust Board Member/Publicity & Research Outreach Office/Heritage Activist, BW Nama Development Trust, Lokgwabe, Botswana

Chantal Knowles, Head of Human History, Tamaki Paenga Hira | Auckland War Memorial Museum – Auckland, New Zealand

Annelize Kotze, Curator of Social History, Iziko Museums South Africa – Cape Town, South Africa

Louisa Onuoha, Chief Education Officer, National Commission for Museums & Monuments – Oyo, Nigeria

Afia Salam, Climate Journalist – Pakistan

The workshop will be hosted in-person at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg, Canada on Saturday 4 March 2023, from 10 am to 5 pm CST. On-site registration opens at 9:30 am. Virtual ticket holders will be provided with a Zoom meeting link prior to the event date.

Join us at lunch for the Commonwealth Association of Museums General Assembly meeting.

In-person tickets include lunch and refreshments.

A pre-workshop reception will take place (in-person only) on Friday 3 March 2023 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Manitoba Museum. Post-workshop tours will be arranged for Sunday 5 March 2023. Details to follow.
