Join us Saturday, April 22 & Sunday, April 23 for Earth Days @ the Manitoba Museum as we explore the importance of water and ice with special programming in the Museum Galleries, Planetarium, and Science Gallery.   

Learn about the important role of water in a multimedia Scavenger Hunt through the Museum Galleries, explore alternate energy forms in the Science Gallery’s hands-on Green Energy workshop, then watch as three feisty fish traverse the ocean on a family-friendly adventure in our newest Planetarium feature, The Enchanted Reef. These activities and more will help you answer the question, “What action can I take to keep our planet healthy?”

Museum Galleries Earth Days Trail
Museum Galleries, self-guided

Follow our Earth Days Trail through the Arctic, Subarctic, Boreal Forest, Parklands, and Prairies biomes of Manitoba to celebrate and investigate the importance of water in our environment. Stops along the trail highlight the power of water and ice to shape our landscape, create habitats, influence our climate, and sustain and challenge Manitoba plants and animals. The Earth Days Trail highlights fascinating facts and specimens you may not have noticed before, and includes special videos of our Curators sharing how water has shaped and continues to shape life in Manitoba.

As you celebrate Earth Day with us, consider our relationship to the Earth and how our everyday actions shape the world we live in. At the end of your Earth Days self-guided tour, pause and reflect at our Earth Day Reflection Wall and ask yourself: 

What action will I take to keep our environment healthy?  How do I want to see the future unfold? 

Investigate Aquatic Animals
Upper Parklands Gallery, April 22 & 23, 1 – 4 pm 

Visit the Parklands Gallery, where our staff will show you some incredible aquatic animal specimens from Manitoba and beyond! You’ll be able to see and touch a diverse array of shells, bones, furs, and fossils as you discover the amazing adaptations that help these animals live and thrive in lakes, ponds, rivers, and oceans throughout the world. 

Try folding an origami fish, make a fishy crayon rubbing, and see a duck-billed platypus!

The Enchanted Reef

When their home reef is destroyed by a fishing trawler, three brave fish set out on a quest across the polluted ocean to find the “Enchanted Reef” — a legendary pristine haven under the sea. Full of humor and imagination, this film for the whole family is an undersea adventure that raises awareness about the impact of pollution on our oceans.

Earth Days will be the final weekend to see The Enchanted Reef at the Planetarium – don’t miss it!

Atlas of a Changing Earth

Catch a special showing of Atlas of a Changing Earth, only during Earth Days! Using stunning, latest-generation imagery from space, this show takes viewers into the dynamic processes causing coastal glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica to melt, and explores how rising seas could threaten coastlines the world over.

Investigate Green Energy  

We use energy in every aspect of our lives. Finding sustainable sources of energy is key to reducing climate change. At the hands-on Green Energy workshop, you can explore different forms of alternative energy, including hydroelectricity, hydrogen gas, and solar power.

Save the Lake! 

Learn about the impact humans have had on the diverse ecosystem of the Lake Winnipeg watershed and test your ability to initiate change with our Lake Winnipeg simulator game. Play individually or listen for announcements throughout the day for timed simulator activities, led by our amazing Science Gallery Communicators.

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, the Manitoba Museum is hosting a panel discussion on Building a Climate Resilient Community. Hear from our panel of experts as they discuss the science and urgency behind climate change.

Generation E is our new energy efficiency education initiative for teachers, students, and classrooms across Manitoba. It’s designed to educate Manitoba’s next generation of energy savers while empowering them to make choices that contribute to a greener, more energy-efficient future.

In celebration of Earth Day, the Manitoba Museum is hosting a series of FREE Virtual Field Trips on April 18 and 20 related to sustainability, biodiversity, and the environment: Climate Change in Manitoba and Save the Lake!
