NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft will crash into the asteroid DImorphos in the first-ever attempt to nudge an asteroid off course, and we will be watching in real-time! DImorphus, the tiny moon of asteroid Didymos, is not a threat to earth, but astronomers will watch to see if the moonlet’s orbit changes after the impact. This will help determine how we might protect earth from future hazardous asteroids if we discover them.
