Level: Introductory

 

Choosing a first telescope is like choosing a first car or musical instrument – there isn’t a single “best” option, it depends on what you want to do with it. In this course, you’ll learn the basics of what telescopes do and don’t do, and how to cut through marketing hype to figure out what options are best for you.

Topics include:

  • Basic considerations – size, budget, interests, location
  • Expectations versus reality
  • Basic telescope types – pros and cons (include binoculars)
  • Star maps and how to use them
  • Computer control – worth it or not?
  • Accessories – what do you really need?

 

Introductory-level courses are 2.5-hour courses conducted as an online Zoom meeting. You will need a device and an internet connection to participate.

 

Introductory courses are $20 for Museum members and $25 for non-members.

These one-evening courses with Planetarium Astronomer, Scott Young, will show you how to find your way around the sky, choose your first telescope, and use your binoculars or telescope to their fullest potential.
