[email protected] Courses: Backyard Science

February 21, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Tuesday, February 21, 2023 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm CST

Level: Advanced

The Universe is a big place, and professional astronomers can’t keep track of everything. A lot of science is still done by amateur observers using backyard telescopes and binoculars – even the unaided eye! In this workshop, you’ll get an introduction to scientific observing and learn about some science projects you can start tonight with your binoculars or small telescope.

Topics include:

  • Visual science: tracking variable stars
  • Patrolling the skies: science with a camera
  • Planetary exploration
  • Measure the shape of an asteroid
  • Advanced projects

Advanced-level courses are three-hour courses designed for people who have binoculars or a small telescope and are looking for projects beyond basic observing. The course is conducted as an online Zoom meeting. You will need a device and an internet connection to participate.

Advanced-level courses are $25 for Museum members and $30 for non-members.
