Brown Bag Lunch Series: The Sloth’s Tale

May 1, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Deep History of an Iconic Manitoba Museum Exhibit

By Dr. Graham Young, Curator of Geology & Paleontology

Manitoba Museum Auditorium

The famous skeleton casts of the Ice-Age giant ground sloth (Megatherium) and armadillo (Glyptodon) have stood in the Museum’s Earth History Gallery since the early 1970s, but their museum history is far longer.

Like many of the rest of us, these replicas are immigrants to Manitoba; they are about as old as this province and have been “companions” in museum exhibits for over a century!

Join Dr. Young as he tells the interesting stories of these antiques, the curious route by which they finally arrived in Manitoba, and how their travels intersected with the parallel history of fossil skeletons in Winnipeg museums.

All talks in the Brown Bag Lunch Series are included with admission to any of our three venues (Museum, Science Gallery or Planetarium), or FREE for members! Bring your lunch, and join us in the Auditorium for a noon-hour talk from one of our amazing Museum staff members.
