Black History Month – Pop-Up Mini Exhibit & Videos

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Saturday, repeating until February 28, 2023

Included with admission to the Museum Galleries on February 4, 11, 18, and 25

Drop in to the Parklands Gallery on Saturday afternoons in February to view photos and artifacts from our collections which highlight the stories of Black Manitobans from the early-to-mid-20th century. Learn about family life the 1930s and how Black organizations were instrumental in creating strong social networks that would eventually change the social climate in Winnipeg for Black citizens.

Drop in to the Winnipeg Gallery Theatre on Saturday afternoons in February where we will be presenting videos in honour of Black History Month. We are pleased to partner with the National Film Board of Canada in presenting two short films on rotation:

Black Soul – 9 minutes

Martine Chartrand’s animated short dives into the heart of Black culture with an exhilarating trip through history. Watch as a young boy traces his roots through the stories his grandmother shares with him about the events that shaped their cultural heritage.

 

Oscar – 12 minutes

Brilliantly mixing animated sequences and archival footage, Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre paints a touching portrait of Canadian virtuoso pianist Oscar Peterson.
