NEW Welcome Gallery

OPENS January 1, 2021 AND RUNS TO January 6, 2031

The Welcome Gallery is a preview of the visitors’ journey through the Museum: the history of nature and ecology of humanity.

The Gallery begins with an exhibit that acknowledges the promises made in Treaties. Created in collaboration with the Elders Council of the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba, it demonstrates the museum’s commitment to active engagement with Indigenous communities.

The iconic bison diorama has been refreshed and reinterpreted with new panels describing the fate of the bison, a story integral to the history of the Métis Nation.

A new, animated map orientates visitors to Manitoba’s landscapes, and shows the dramatic changes of the last 18,000 years.

To build anticipation for what is to come, eight gallery introductions display unique specimens and artifacts, and explain the Museum’s layout, through time and from north to south. Visitors will see the wild species that lived, and still live here, and learn how they have shaped human societies, just as we have altered natural ecosystems.

The new Discovery Room will feature changing exhibitions of the Museum’s collections or exhibitions that highlight community collaborations. The inaugural exhibition for this renovated space is The Museum Collections Illuminated: Celebrating 50 Years.

The Gallery ends with a clear view of famed Indigenous artist Daphne Odjig’s spectacular Creation of the World mural.
