This year on Canada Day, the Manitoba Museum will be open to bring us together. By gathering, we can deepen our understanding that, as a friend recently wrote to me, “Kinship extends into the past, with ancestors, and into the future, with forthcoming generations.”
I sincerely hope you spend July 1st in the spirit of care and love for one another.
I hope you recognize that each of us, even if we were not alive or present on these lands in the past, are responsible for the future.
And lastly, I hope that like me, you wrestle with what it means to both ‘love this country’ and desperately want it to be better; to feel grateful for the freedoms we enjoy while being aware those privileges are not equally afforded to everyone; to feel propelled to act for change, to challenge systems, to hold political, business, and community leaders accountable for their unfulfilled obligations; all of that and so much more, while repairing the harms of the past, shining a light on the harms of the present, and living into the future in such a way that weaves the threads of our nation together.
