CELEBRATE CANADA DAY AT THE MANITOBA MUSEUM

Winnipeg, MB (June 27, 2016): The Manitoba Museum invites children to wear red and white in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary to receive free admission to the Legacies of Confederation: A New Look at Manitoba History exhibit (includes free entry to Museum Galleries). This Canada 150 exhibit offers a fascinating look at the impacts of confederation on Manitoba. Visitors can also enjoy the premiere of the Planetarium show Chasing the Shadow: This Summer’s Solar Eclipse, and take in the summer blockbuster exhibit World’s Giant Dinosaurs.

The year of Canada’s 150th anniversary happens to coincide with a total solar eclipse which will occur on Monday, August 21! For many Canadians, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, from our location here in Manitoba, the eclipse shadow will reach about 70% coverage of the sun. Chasing the Shadow: This Summers’s Solar Eclipse, developed by the Museum, will share tips on how to safely enjoy the eclipse and tells a fascinating story of the historical and cultural impacts. The show opens on Saturday, July 1 in the Planetarium Star Theatre.  (Eclipse glasses are available for purchase in the Museum Shop).

To enjoy free admission to the Museum Galleries (which includes the Legacies exhibit), children must be between the ages of 3 and 12 and be dressed in red and/or white clothing (cost of admission to additional Museum areas is extra). Visitors are invited to complete the Canada Day Scavenger Hunt, inspired by animals featured on Canadian coins, for a chance to win a family membership.

In addition to the Museum and Planetarium activities, the Science Gallery will open the Canada C3 Museum Hub.  This is an interactive experience featuring a giant floor map of Canada, virtual reality headsets, and science experiments that give visitors the chance to virtually travel Canada’s three coasts in real time alongside the 150-day Canada C3 expedition.
