Winnipeg, MB (May 12): In an early birthday party celebration, the Manitoba Museum welcomed 8,434 Museum visits on Saturday May 6 as the province of Manitoba turns 147 years on May 12, 2017! Line-ups coursed through the lower level as hundreds of families took in Planetarium shows and stood in line to get their turn in the Science Gallery. Steady streams of Museum-goers filled through the nine Museum Galleries pausing to line up at the Nonsuch and Proscenium Theater in the Urban Gallery.
This free event is made possible through the generous support of Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. As part of the Access for All community initiative, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries makes it possible for thousands of Manitobans to access the Museum each year. A very special thank you is due to the 30 volunteers from MLL who joined in with Museum staff to ensure an enjoyable visit for all.
“The Manitoba Museum is a place of learning and wonder that celebrates our province’s rich culture and history,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries President and CEO, Peter Hak. “Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is thrilled to once again be the presenting sponsor of Manitoba Day at the Museum, an event that gives all visitors the chance to explore and create their own journey through history and beyond at the Manitoba Museum, the Science Gallery, and the Planetarium. Thank you to all of the volunteers and employees who made the Manitoba Day celebration possible.”
In addition to a Cake-a-toba birthday cake competition – cakes which tasted as good as they looked, visitors got to interact with Niibin, the mascot for the Canada Summer Games. Niibin was unexpectedly joined by Vicky Velociraptor from the Museum’s upcoming World’s Giant Dinosaurs exhibition. The roaring, blinking, tail wagging mascot thrilled visitors of all ages and is scheduled to return May 19 for the opening of the exhibition in Alloway Hall!
The Museum was pleased to welcome MLA for St. Norbert, Jon Reyes to bring greetings from the Province as well as Olympic silver medalist Janine Stephens, representing the MLCC IMPACT team.
