Winnipeg, MB (April 27, 2016): .Making a stop in Winnipeg on its tour across the country, Innovation 150 brings an exhibit and hands-on programming to the Manitoba Museum in celebration of Canada’s 150th. The Innovation 150 project includes three distinct experiences: an exhibit entitled The Power of Ideas, presentations on innovation, and a Maker Space workshop. Coordinated by the Canadian Association of Science Centres this exciting opportunity is only at the Museum from May 1 to 4. (Entry to The Power of Ideas exhibit is included with regular admission May 2 to 4.)
The Power of Ideas exhibit in Festival Hall is open to the public and focuses on the process of science – mirroring the behaviours critical to the work done by researchers. Illustrating the process through engaging, hands-on, mind-expanding experiences, this exhibit also promotes science, technology, engineering, and math education. It might even inspire exciting and more in-depth discussions about science around the dinner table!
The Power of Ideas presentations take place in the Museum classrooms and are only available to school groups during regular Museum hours. The talks use stories, examples, and interactive activities to explore innovation in all its forms – from technical gains to social progress – and share the key tools to making it happen. Most importantly, the presentation underscores that absolutely anyone can innovate.
The ACTUA Maker Space Workshop in the Boeing Explore Science Zone introduces the concepts of the engineering design process and is also only available to school groups during regular hours. Students learn to plan, prototype, experiment, and refine ideas to solve challenges faced by their communities. The workshops culminate in design-and-build challenges that bring these ideas to life with the help of 3D printers. Participants will also explore food security and see how 3D printers can ensure all Canadians have sustainable access to healthy food and clean water.
Innovation 150 is a Canada 150 signature event supported by the Perimeter Institute Institution for Theoretical Physics, ACTUA, the Canadian Association of Science Centres, and the Government of Canada.

as You Explore Innovation at the Manitoba Museum
PUBLIC EVENT • May 4 from 6 pm to 9 pm • The Science Gallery, Planetarium, Classrooms, and Festival Hall are open on Thursday, May the 4th –“Star Wars” Day – to provide public access to the Innovation 150 suite of programs and the exhibit. Innovation 150 activities are free with paid admission to the Science Gallery or Planetarium.
As part of Star Wars Day, visitors are encouraged to come dressed as a Star Wars character. Everyone in costume will be entered to win a special prize of a Star Wars LEGO set. Evening visitors can see the Power of Ideas exhibition in Festival Hall. They can check out the ACTUA Maker Space in the Boeing Explore Science Zone and attend a Power of Ideas presentation.
